Project Gutenberg (PG) is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to "encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks". It is the oldest digital library, it was founded in 1971 by American writer Michael S. Hart. The texts available in this free library are for the most part in the public domain, or as they are never covered by copyright or copyright, or as these restrictions have lapsed. There are also some texts covered by copyright but which have obtained permission from the authors for the new form of publication. The Gutenberg project appears to have reached nearly 60,000 articles in its free eBook collection.
