Project Gutenberg is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to "encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks". It is the oldest digital library, it was founded in 1971 by American writer Michael S. Hart. The texts available in this free library are for the most part in the public domain, or because they have been releases with an open access licence, or because the author rights have been elapsed. There are also some texts covered by copyright which have obtained the permission from the authors for such form of publishing. The Gutenberg project claims to have reached nearly 60,000 entries in its free eBook collection.
